Giru Construction steps down as official sponsor

first_imgRugby League BY MAL TAIME Giru Construction Ltd has dropped the bombshell as the official sponsor of the Waghi Tumbe for the Digicel Cup this season. Managing director Fredrick Koldop made the announcement yesterday that shocked the management and the players who are preparing for the 2019 Digicel Cup season that is expected to start in April. Despite the sudden announcement, the franchise club is likely to come under the umbrella of the Jiwaka provincial government business arm, the Jiwaka Development Corporation who should take over the naming rights sponsorship. Giru Construction and Jiwaka Development Corporation have been at loggerheads over the official or naming rights sponsorship of Waghi Tumbe. However, Digicel Cup administrator Stanley Hondina come out in the media two weeks ago to put to rest any doubts hovering over the minds of the public, supporters, interested parties and the sponsors. The news about Giru Construction Ltd’s withdrawal left the management and players shocked and disappointed, with some players having no intention of joining other teams in the Digicel Cup. They have already selected their training side and are preparing for the competition that is expected to kick off in April. On a positive note, the Giru Construction Ltd has made it possible for three players – Joshua Nani, Emmanuel Wayne and Sipa Korken – to play in the New South Wales cup competition in Australia this season, while Joe Frank has made it to the SP PNG Hunters training squad. Korken and Wayne were earlier named in the Kimbe Cutters squad but had decided to take up the offer in Australia because it will provide potential. Hondina has confirmed the withdrawal of Giru Construction but was in tight-lipped about the situation only saying “Koldop would outline the reasons for the withdrawal”. Koldop told the Post-Courier from Port Moresby yesterday that Giru Construction made a decision to step down as a major sponsor for the betterment of the company, both the people of Jiwaka and Western Highlands and its supporters. He said the company paid the K100,000 affiliation fees for Waghi Tumbe to participate in the Digicel Cup this year for second year running but because of the tussle between Giru Construction Ltd and Jiwaka Development Corporation, the current sponsor had to step down. But Koldop has left a challenge, saying: “If this year, Waghi Tumbe repeats its trend to become wooden spooners, Giru Construction will definitely bid to take over the naming rights next year.” He said the franchise club was tagged wooden spooners since its revival and until last year after Giru Construction took over as sponsors, Tumbe made it to third spot. Koldop said Waghi Tumbe head coach Francis Ray was also assaulted at Banz when he was there to organize a trial match to select the final training squad for for the franchise club. He said Giru Construction was fortunate to take the team to the finals, finishing third and a bench mark has been set. It also created a pathway for Frank to join up with the Hunters and the other three players Wayne, Korken and Nani to play in the New South Wales Cup competition.last_img read more

NFL news and notes: Chiefs, Mahomes receive good news; 17-game schedule may be on horizon

first_imgThe MRI has confirmed the #Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes suffered a dislocated kneecap, but not significant additional damage, sources tell me and @JamesPalmerTV. He’ll seek additional opinions to be sure. The plan is for him to return this season after a brief absence.— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) October 18, 2019The Chiefs plan on him returning last this season.Kansas City currently sits at 5-2 and first place in the AFC West. Three of its next four games are at home before it heads on its bye in Week 12.Amari Cooper practices for CowboysAmari Cooper suffered a thigh bruise during the Cowboys’ 31-24 loss to the Packers in Week 6, and had to exit last week’s 24-22 loss to the Jets early in the game due to the lingering injury.“From the time I had hurt it in the Green Bay game to the time I talked to you guys, it had taken a huge leap,” Cooper told reporters Thursday. “So I thought it would continue to get a lot better each and every day — but it kind of plateaued and it only got a little bit better every day.”Dallas desperately needs Cooper to be healthy, especially with the team in the midst of a three-game skid after starting the season 3-0. Cooper plans to see how he feels after Friday’s practice to determine whether or not he’ll suit up against Philadelphia on Sunday.“You know it’s going to be a challenge, it’s going to be a dogfight for us,” Cooper said. “It’s a divisional game, and it’s always a dogfight.”The Cowboys (3-3) host the division-rival Eagles (3-3) on Sunday at 8:20 p.m. ET.NFL Players’ Association open to discussing 17-game regular seasonIn recent years, rumors of NFL owners wanting to expand the regular season to 18 games have surfaced and been major talking points by players, fans and experts alike. It seems players have begun to warm up to the idea as ESPN’s reporting the NFLPA is open to discussing a 17-game regular season as part of the next collective bargaining agreement. The report states the NFLPA’s in favor of expanding the season as long as the players’ share in revenue is increased by a “sufficient amount” in the new deal. While a formal 17-game proposal hasn’t been created, the report states details have been discussed regarding the new schedule, including bye weeks for teams before Thursday night games, moving the Super Bowl back to Presidents’ Day weekend and players getting paid on a 52-week schedule as opposed to just during the season. The current CBA expires in March 2021.Two things that don’t matterBroncos’ Vic Fangio saying he’s disappointed by offensive performance this seasonYou don’t have to be a football expert to notice Denver’s offense this season has been subpar. The Broncos have scored more than 20 points just twice this season, and in Thursday’s home loss to the Chiefs, they only managed six against a porous Kansas City defense.”It was all levels of our passing game (that) were problems,” coach Vic Fangio said (via ESPN). “Protection sometimes, receivers not getting open sometimes, (the Chiefs) using good coverages for us that maybe we weren’t ready for; it’s certainly a problem we have to get rectified moving forward. … It’s disappointing not to be ultimately competitive out there.”Last offseason, Denver general manager John Elway traded a 2019 fourth-round pick in the NFL Draft to Baltimore for aging quarterback Joe Flacco. The former Super Bowl MVP was coming off a season where he only played in nine games and hasn’t looked like the signal-caller who lead the Ravens to a championship seven seasons ago. Since Peyton Manning retired, the Broncos have seen five different quarterbacks start games for them and can’t seem to find stability at the position. Not to mention the team opted to hire a defensive-minded coach in Fangio this past offseason, so it wasn’t like things were going to improve on the offensive side of the ball this season.Bears quarterback Mitch Trubisky practices, listed as questionable for Sunday’s game vs. SaintsMitch Trubisky’s been sidelined after dislocating his shoulder and partially tearing his labrum on Sep. 29 against the Vikings. The Bears released their injury report Friday, and while Trubisky was a full participant in practice all week, he’s listed as questionable for Sunday’s game.#Bears Friday injury report— Chicago Bears (@BearsPR) October 18, 2019″That where we have him, at [questionable],” Bears coach Matt Nagy said (via ESPN). “He’s been doing good in practice and I like where he’s at. We said earlier in the week that it was going to be a day-by-day thing and so far he’s stacked good days together.” Chicago’s played one game in Trubisky’s absence: a 24-21 loss to Oakland in London. But having the former first-round pick might not make things any better for the Bears. The 25-year-old’s looked pedestrian at best in the four games he’s appeared in leaving Chicago to rely on its tenacious defense to keep it in games.  Three things that matterPatrick Mahomes likely to return this seasonWhen Mahomes went down with a knee injury during the second quarter of the Chiefs’ 30-6 win over the Broncos, the NFL world held its collective breath. But a new report suggests Mahomes’ injury isn’t as serious as it was initially believed.NFL Network’s reporting the reigning NFL MVP had an MRI on Friday and it confirmed the diagnosis of a dislocated knee cap and that there’s “no significant additional damage.” Related News Amari Cooper injury update: Cowboys receiver (thigh bruise) to practice Friday Chicago (3-2) hosts New Orleans (5-1) on Sunday at 4:25 p.m. ET.One video you have to seeThis supercut of Rams coach Sean McVay ending every news conference saying “Alright?
