News / Autumn Statement: ‘We’ll take fuel tax freeze, but he could have done more for UK freight’

first_imgBy Alexander Whiteman 24/11/2016 Freight and transport lobby groups have claimed UK chancellor Philip Hammond could have done more to improve the lives of UK transport operators than simply news that fuel duty would be frozen for a seventh consecutive year.Responding to the chancellor’s autumn statement yesterday, Freight Transport Association deputy chief executive James Hookham said that while the freeze recognised the impact on businesses and families, a cut would have brought greater economic benefit.“The chancellor has understood the arguments made by the FairFuelUK campaign and fuel duty has moved from being a ‘sin tax’, like alcohol and tobacco duty, to being recognised as a core burden on families and businesses,” said Mr Hookham.“But the chancellor needs to continue that logic and recognise that reducing tax duty will bring even greater benefit.”Mr Hookham said he expected the freeze to result in savings of £9,000 a year for a typical 10-vehicle haulage fleet.Road Haulage Association (RHA) chief executive Richard Burnett echoed Mr Hookham’s stance, noting that a cut in fuel duty would have made a real difference for truck operators across the country.“But a further fuel duty freeze? We’ll happily take that,” he added.Mr Burnett said the freeze would help mitigate the 2% rise in Insurance Premium Tax, which he described as a “disappointment”.As a founder member of FairFuelUK, the FTA has consistently lobbied government for a 3p cut in the 57.95p per litre fuel duty rate, which it claims would deliver annual savings of £1,500 per 44-tonne truck. The FTA argued this would support transport firms that not only operate on tight margins, but also in an atmosphere of uncertainty following the Brexit vote. However, the chancellor’s commitment of an additional £1.1bn investment in local transport networks across England was applauded, with £220m earmarked for addressing traffic pinch points on strategic roads.“The increased spending on infrastructure is great news and we await the details of which specific road and rail schemes will go ahead in the next few days, but we are pleased that the east-west corridor investment between Oxford and Cambridge is going ahead,” said Mr Hookham.“Another priority for FTA is the route of the approach roads to the new Lower Thames Crossing between Gravesend and Tilbury.”Mr Hookham said that the FTA would be presenting a list of preferred schemes that most benefited freight movements to local highway authorities and devolved governments. The RHA said the decision to increase infrastructure investment would be welcomed by a haulage industry that is claimed to transport 85% of the country’s goods every year.“Roads are the haulier’s place of work,” said Mr Burnett. “Any measures to make their journey easier, more efficient and certainly more cost-effective will contribute greatly to the movement of the UK economy and help ease the cost of congestion.”Kevin Richardson, chief executive of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), highlighted the £390m put aside for development of low-emission vehicles and the development of connected autonomous vehicles; £1bn to improve and develop digital infrastructure; and £450m to be spent on trialling rail digital signalling technology.“The importance of technology to develop a green, reliable and fit-for-purpose network across the country will only help contribute to raising Britain’s productivity,” added Mr Richardson.last_img read more

FC Schalke 04 Esports announces Honor sponsorship

first_imgFC Schalke 04 Esports has found a new sponsor in the form of German smartphone brand Honor. The news was announced in a joint press conference at Gamescom in Cologne, with a two-year deal being signed by both parties. We are thrilled to take the next step into mobile gaming with @Honorglobal as a partner. With the help of their “the Play” phone we’ll have exactly what we need to succeed.— Schalke 04 Esports (@S04Esports) August 21, 2018Tim Reichert, Chief Gaming Officer of FC Schalke 04 Esports has this to say about the partnership: “We are pleased to introduce Honor as official partner of FC Schalke 04 Esports. Honor is a young brand that stands for technological innovation. Like no other company, they are in contact with their supporters – a bond with the fans, as we live on Schalke.”Honor revealed its very own gaming-dedicated phone in June: the Honor Play. The smartphone brand entered esports last year when it became a sponsor of SK Gaming and is owned by Chinese group Huawei.Franko Fischer, Head of Marketing Communications at Honor Germany added: “We look forward to setting new standards in mobile gaming with FC Schalke 04 as an established, innovative esports team.”FC Schalke 04 is represented in League of Legends (competing in the EU LCS), FIFA, and PES. The football club’s gaming division’s other partners include AOK NorthWest, CORSAIR, effect, KONAMI, and Deutsche Glasfaser.Esports Insider says: It’s a tad strange that the organisation is now sponsored by a smartphone brand as it doesn’t compete in any mobile titles – at the moment, at least. The statement from Fischer does suggest that this expansion is likely however, as the parties plan to set “new standards in mobile gaming.”Join our Discord Server!last_img read more

Bear talks Tiger

first_imgBecause Jack Nicklaus was in Utah the day Tiger Woods won the U.S. Open for his 14th major title, he addressed Woods’ latest accomplishment. What happened this week was pretty phenomenal, he said. He didn’t have any license whatsoever to accomplish what he did. But through pure determination, he gutted it out and made some phenomenal shots and ended up the winner. When asked if he wants Woods to break his record for majors (Nicklaus has 18), he said, not particularly and got a little testy when it was suggested that it’s inevitable Woods will break his record.I don’t think anybody’s given into that fact, he said. Tiger certainly hasn’t. I fully expect Tiger to catch me, but he’s not there yet, and he’s got to keep working at it.Nicklaus also sees a positive side to all the talk about Woods getting close to his record.I have no issue with Tiger breaking my record, he said. Every time his name is mentioned, mine is mentioned right beside it, and as a 68-year-old guy, I get almost as much ink and television time as Tiger does.Of course, now that Woods is out for the year with a knee injury, it’s going to take him longer to catch Jack.
